The mountainous range of Serra de São Mamede provides a scenery which surprises the visitor at every bend of the road: the silent and fresh atmosphere of the slopes with chestnut trees and holm oaks, the valleys with trim white villages and quaint chapels surrounded by orchards and vegetable plots, the abundant streams.

The pretty town of Castelo de Vide, dating from Roman times and sprawling on one of these green slopes, has preserved within its walls a remarkable patrimony: churches, fountains, mansions, Gothic doorways and the characteristic maze-like Judiaria (Jewish quarter), with its small white houses, cobbled alleys and a synagogue dating from the 13th century.

Also worth visiting are the Baroque Church of Saint Mary, the 18th-century Town Hall and pillory, the carved stone fountain of Fonte da Vila or the 13th-century Chapel of São Salvador do Mundo.

Within the walls of the castle (now in ruins) which gave the town its name, the small chapel of Our Lady of Joy exhibits splendid polychrome floral tiles from the 17th century.

Castelo de Vide is proud of its traditional and popular festivities, namely during Easter and Carnival, counting with the enthusiastic participation of all the local population.

The gastronomy is rich, with specialities such as sarapatel (haggis), ensopado de cabrito (kid stew with bread and gravy), migas com entrecosto (pork ribs with a kind of bread-soup) and splendid liqueurs.
