A predominantly agricultural county, Oliveira do Bairro marks the transition between the fertile plains near the coastline and the mountainous inland.

It is integrated in the Bairrada demarcated wine region, so the wine-growing industry plays an important role in the county's economy, but there are also rice-swamps and fields of potatoes, corn and beans, besides extensive woods of pines and eucalyptus.

The town of Oliveira do Bairro was founded in 1514 and exhibits an interesting parish church.

At the little village of Aguada de Cima, the Church of Saint Eulália (18th century) is proud of its 15th-century sculptures.

The zone is crossed by several rivers and streams where visitors can fish barbels, carps and other freshwater fish.

However, the two ex-libris of the region are undoubtedly two specialities linked to the local gastronomy: leitão à Bairrada (sucking pig roasted in a wood-burning oven) and the famous Bairrada wine, together with a good variety of sparkling wines.

Other typical dishes are chanfana (goat cooked in a clay pan with a rich sauce of red wine), a stew of sucking-pig and beans, or rojões à moda da Bairrada (small pieces of pork fried in their own fat).

The county is also proud of its handicrafts, including a great variety of products almost always linked to its rural traditions, as is the case of the wicker-baskets, the mats made of bunho (a sort of rush which is found in swamps) and of the bottles decorated with straw, besides works in tin and ceramics and rag carpets.
