Located in the island of São Jorge, on the gentler southern coast which contrasts with the steep and abrupt cliffs of the north, Calheta is a tiny town where the rhythm of life is calm and leisurely.

The geological formation and relief of the island favour cattle breeding, and the delicious cured cheese of São Jorge is deservedly famous.

At Calheta, a small museum portrays the local history with objects such as agricultural utensils and religious sculptures, or the special breads baked for the Holy Spirit Festival (the popular festivities of the Azores celebrated each Sunday for seven weeks after Easter).

Near Calheta, Manadas is a pretty village proud of the rich Baroque interior of the church of Santa Barbara, and at Urzelina visitors can admire the isolated tower of a church which was buried by lava in 1808.

The island is also known for the
fajãs (tongues of land resulting from the collapse of cliffs along the centuries): Fajã do Ouvidor is one of the most pleasant sites of this mountainous island and also a popular Summer resort, but visitors generally enjoy exploring the paths that climb up and down between all the
fajãs.

Crafts include embroideries and woven fabrics, and the gastronomy privileges prawn and cockle dishes.
